Culmination of project to commission, perform, and record new works for violin and double bass.

American Record Guide, July/August 2020

With  the  exception  of  Andrea  Clearfield's  Dream of Trees,  a  somber,  attenuated  work,  all  the  pieces  here  are  spirited  and  buoyant.  An  entire  album  of  works  for  violin  and  double bass  sounds  tedious,  but  the  players  conjure  subtle  and  vibrant  colors  from  their  instruments and play with go-for-broke abandon. Michael Daugherty's Diaries of Adam and  Eve  is  a  witty  take  on  Mark  Twain,  full  of  slides,  whispers,  and  whacks.  Twain  would  have admired its dry whimsy. Daniel M Cavanagh's Reach  explores  extreme  contrasts  between violin and bass sonorities as a metaphor  for  reaching  across  the  aisle  and  having  dialog  with  people  we  disagree  with.  It  is  meant as a gesture of unification in this age of polarization;  and  the  music,  with  its  constantly  transforming  themes,  supports  the  idea  amiably.  Tom  Knific's  Duo  3  has  a  more  international  flavor  and  more  syncopation,  celebrating  America,  Europe,  and  Africa  with  charm  and  quiet  exuberance.  Knific's  double  career as a classical and jazz artist serves him well  here;  the  piece  has  stylistic  complexity  even  though  the  ideas  are  simple  and  lucid.  Another  jazzy  treat  is  the  Tango  in  George  B  Chave's  Duo,  a  piece  that  brings  this  spirited  program  to  a  happy  close.  The  recording,  made  at  the  University  of  Texas  at  Arlington,  captures  the  most  intimate  colors  of  both  instruments.  Jack Sullivan

Fanfare Magazine, Issue 53:5, May/June 2020

An entire album of new music for violin and double bass? You bet, and it is an utter delight. All five of the composers take advantage of the singing qualities of the string instruments, each producing music of a lyrical and even narrative nature. The recital opens with the CD’s title piece, Michael Daugherty’s take on the great Genesis tale via the famous short story of Mark Twain. Daugherty is certainly the best-known composer here, having established a solid reputation for creating music of strong dramatic impact and comfortable accessibility. This seven-section work is lively and entertaining, touching in spots, although it plumbs no great emotional depths. Daniel M. Cavanaugh’s relatively brief work is blustery and exciting, seeming to channel a similar energy from Beethoven chamber music. Both Tom Knific and George B. Chave are represented by groups of three short works characterized by concise vigor, and, in the case of Chave, some invigorating jazzy rhythmic riffs. Andrea Clearfield is a Philadelphia-based composer whose career I have been following, with great pleasure, for many years. This four-section work is characteristic of her style; carefully crafted, theatrical, tuneful, and above all, soulful. Walvoord and Unzicker, who commissioned this music, play it with precision and gusto, and the recording is excellent. This album may seem like a novelty item at first blush, but it holds up well to repeated listening. Peter Burwasser

The article offers guidelines in teaching a stringed instrument that one does not play. It is deemed important to consider how much knowledge is transferable between stringed instruments. It is advised to get hold of the instrument, get help from successful teachers, and on not to panic in facing the first lesson. One needs to have the right confidence to play the instrument.
